Biofilms.. cement sand grains together. When say the lake shore has on lapping waves. Sand has come over me.. I need to move toward the light. Ya know... this is the gospel.. We gotta keeeeeep that light. Microbes go together and they start to precipitate, make a structure out of them and build. The rest of the colony goes up through and forms another squishy soft green layer on the top. So it's their access to food. These communities, this is your common ancestor, this is at the tap root, this is, this is 3 billion years before the first plants or the first complex cells is a bout 2 and a half billion years before that. So this is the whole story of life on earth for about 85% of the planet's history. They're symbiotic. They only can live because of the ones around them. This is the most interesting problem that ever was; molecules self-assembling to make all this!!! This is nature's chemistry lab. Suddenly my mind opened... and I was in the pool, I was in the ancient pond, and I was cycling one of these bubbles. What happens after the bubbles cycle back into solution? And I saw one of them wobbled apart. As they do, they're very fragile. Wobbled. Wooo off it went, started busting up. Another one got ya know shocked and crystalized like this fooop. But there's one, there's one that's still around. It's at the bottom of the pond, and it's with all the other survivors, and now it's fusing! Oh my God! The polymer that was contained in it.. It took the full ride. It took the whole trip. And then it went back into the smudgy layers, cause it all fused back into layers, and now it's around again... Whooooaaaaa. And a copy of it got made along the way. Two protocells of the same polymer in them, and they're stable. It's going back down, and there's the whole population of ones that were selected for and when they fuse the polymer joins that one. And they're going through again.. and there's the one that... There's the one that now is doing metabolism, there's one that's doing structure, and it's going around, and around, and around... It is the Genesis Engine DNA.... This is the common ancestor! The common ancestor's a community, not an individual. We did not come from competing individuals, we came from a collaborative network of simple things that were donating innovations and tools to a communal structure. So in the Hadean Earth at 4.3 billion years if you're an individual protocell you're not gonna be around long.. You got asteroid impacts non-stop. You got acid rain. 40ft tides. The moon is an eighth of the sky.. It's a really tough environment, so you gotta huddle together to make this thing go. A symbiotic start, a communal unit is the unit behind the microbial community, is itself a community which was lifted into existence out of physics.. Out of a physical system in a beautiful way, where the physics started to say "hey I've been around 13 billion years and all I've been able to do is on-off." The universe goes on off on off on off Stars form.... And physicists have been looking for information in physics forever and they haven't been able to find it. You give me a wiggly little soap-bubble-molecule which creates a container, stuff goes into the container, which makes things more probable, it's a probability engine, and then you can grow these long chain things that store information. It's like oh physics "we got information now" We got memory and now oh, we got... DNA I was in the illusion of separateness. I was a body.. A spaceship... Through the universe... Separate... That all fell away that day. This is the primary challenge of our time, of the 21st century.. Is the story of separateness. And the story of unity. Of community... In order to have a revolution in the twenty's, the 2020's, we need these powerful new ideas. One of them is psychedelics as medicine; tremendously powerful tools for healing. We have AIs. Tools that are both inner, psychedelic, and neuronal, and then we have.. Digital ethereal tools. All emergence comes from a network of collaborating entities. That we don't come from "survival of the fittest," a term which Darwin hated, he detested this; he was convinced to use this in his later publications. This term is very destructive...
